Surfing in the Age of Quarantine
By Luke Andrews

When I originally found out that quarantine was going to result in me going home and surfing my local waves, I felt like I was about to jump out of my own skin. It had been months since I had been at home swimming in clear water enjoying the sun and local reefs. At the time of this news I was fed up with the culture of surfing in Los Angeles. I had gotten an incredible session a couple weeks prior, with barrels hitting the outside sand bar and peeling fast and clean. However, that day still didn’t make up for the numerous times I had gotten completely skunked, got burned, stuck in traffic, and inevitably smelt like a skunk after swimming in the water. El Porto sits right in front of a sewage treatment plant, a scene drastically different from the quiet, local beaches I cherished and grew up enjoying. Nonetheless, I was beyond stoked to hear this news. As many of my friends stayed at school to enjoy a few days off to party and take a breather from the school routine, I chose to immediately pack all of my belongings, jump in my car, and speed home hoping to catch an evening surf session.
